Treemendous Quanah Initiative a Success

The Treemendous Quanah Initiative planted a total of 49 trees across Quanah this past Saturday. Locations included the Quanah City Park, the Hardeman County Historical Museums, the Quanah Community Center, the Downtown Medicine Mound Museum, and the the Goodlett Cemetery.

The Treemendous Quanah Initiative plant­ed a total of 49 trees across Quanah this past Saturday. Locations included the historic Quanah City Park, the Hardeman County Historical Museums, the Quanah Community Center, the Downtown Medicine Mound Museum, and the Goodlett Cemetery.

Steve Houser, certified arborist and the chair­person of the Indian Marker Tree Committee with the Texas Historic Tree Coalition, planted Comanche Marker Trees at Heritage Park across from the Hardeman County Historical Museum and one across from the Downtown Medicine Mound Museum.

Don Parker, Ron Parker, Ardith Parker Fleming, and Madison Downs blessed the planting of the marker trees. Don Parker performed a blessing ceremony while burning cedar for those in attendance. Don Parker also sang the "Quanah Song", a family song written by an elder that has been passed down through their family. Madison Downs also performed a sign language rendition of The Lord's Prayer.

At 5:00 p.m., Darby Sparkman took the stage at the First Annual Concert at the Park and played through tracks form her debut record along with fan favorites. Ending the night was Austin Cunningham, a seasoned veteran songwriter and music artist. Cunningham played songs recorded throughout his career and kept those in attendance entertained throughout the evening.
